The Department of English is one of the newest and promising departments of Bangladesh Army University of Science and Technology (BAUST), Saidpur. It set out its journey in Fall 2016.

The Department of English is the liberal arts core of the university. The department fosters the imaginative, observational, analytical and communicative skills of its students through its three major streams: Literature, Applied Linguistics & ELT and Media and Cultural Studies. The department also offers minor programs in History, Philosophy, Bangla Literature, Computer Fundamentals etc. which help the students to contextualize their learning.

The program is spread over 04 (four) academic years and 08 (eight) semesters. The course contents cover the major British authors and their significant works along with major areas related to literary criticism, critical theory, applied linguistics, and language teaching. Besides, classical literatures and literatures from America and the continent have been included in the syllabus. Pedagogical methods of this department emphasize interaction and communication, so that students graduate with confidence in both oral and written communication abilities.

The department is committed to nurture the potentialities of the students to make them capable to survive and compete well in a 21st century backdrop. Its BA (Hon’s) in English program is maneuvered by carefully selected syllabus combining useful courses both from English literature and linguistics. The courses will introduce the students with great works of western literary canon and make them familiarize with the foundation and advanced linguistic and literary theories. On a practical ground, having completed the degree, the students will be able to express their ideas clearly and fluently both in written and spoken English. Developing good presentation skill is also a key focus in most of the courses.

In classrooms, students are encouraged to explore their full capacity through maximum participation in class-room activities such as: pair/group discussion, presentation, free-writing etc. The weaker students are specially taken care ensuring their maximum attendance and class participation. Outside classroom the department has launched a language club where students from any department across the university may join and actively take part and enrich their language skills.

The Department of English looks forward to take the research works in international level and to contribute to the Higher Education of Bangladesh and beyond.
