Currently Dr. Mahmud is serving as Dean (In charge) of Faculty of Civil Engineering. He joined as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, BAUST, Saidpur, in 2021, and later he was entrusted with the position of Head of the Department. Before joining BAUST, he had working experience as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP), Dhaka for more than 5 years. He was also Head and Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Information Technology & Sciences (UITS), Dhaka.
After his graduation, he started his work as an Assistant Engineer at the Department of Public Health Engg. (DPHE), Dhaka, under the Bangladesh Water Supply Programme Project (BWSPP), which was funded by the World Bank. He has international working experience, for instance, at Tepia Corporation Japan (Asia’s leading consulting company providing various analytical and intelligent solutions for cross-border and technology-related business expansions) and Kankyosoken Co. Ltd. (a firm of consultation and construction of various types of wastewater treatment facilities, including design, water quality analysis, and maintenance).
Dr. Mahmud has been working and doing research in the environmental sector for over 15 years. His research interests include Environmental sanitation, Fecal sludge management (FSM), Water Quality Indices (WQI), Water supply, Water and wastewater (domestic and industrial) treatment, Low-cost water and wastewater treatment options for developing countries, Greywater treatment and recycling, Groundwater pollution, Environmental policy, Environmental pollution control, Climate change and global environment, Alternate water resources in developing countries, Water and wastewater management, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Environmental management.
Dr. Mahmud’s research mainly focuses on developing low-cost technologies for water and wastewater treatment targeting low- and middle-income countries. During his six-year research journey at Ritsumeikan University, Japan, he worked under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jun Nakajima to develop a Simple Ceramic Filter (SCF) made of clay soil (80%) and rice bran (20%) and also to investigate its sustainable applications in water and wastewater treatment processes. Besides lab-scale experiments, extensive field test results in rural Bangladesh confirmed that the developed SCF could remove more than 99% of arsenic from groundwater. It worked well to treat wastewater in the Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) process to separate activated sludge and in the Waste Stabilisation Pond (WSP) process to separate the community of algae and bacteria. The key features of the SCF are that it is inexpensive compared to its alternatives and that it uses locally available and cheap materials. His innovative research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including those by Elsevier, IWA, and JSWE. Additionally, he presented his research findings at various international conferences and received different prestigious awards and honors. His pioneering research got recognition through several media coverages in Japan.
Currently, he has 27 publications (19 journals and 08 conferences) in several reputed journals and international conference proceedings.
Dr. Mahmud was involved in several internationally funded research projects:
i) Research and Development for Water Reuse in Tropical Regions (WateR-Intro) a collaboration project between Japan and Thailand. The goal of the project was to develop water reuse technologies that contribute to the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) principle of water resources in each of the urban, industrial, and rural sectors in Thailand and other tropical countries.
ii) Sustainable Technologies for Arsenic Removal from Groundwater in Bangladesh, a collaboration project between Japan and Bangladesh focusing on the development and feasibility study of a hybrid arsenic removal filter in rural areas of Bangladesh.
Dr. Mahmud completed several training programs and workshops and attended seminars that included: Urban Rainwater Harvesting System, Faecal Sludge and Septage Management, A Sustainable Water Treatment Technology for Developing Countries, Bangladesh Water Security, Water Safety Plan, Participatory Management of Low-Cost Water Supply and Sanitation, etc.
Dr. Mahmud usually takes theoretical and sessional courses on Environment and basic Civil Engineering at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Till now, he has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate theses.
Apart from his academic assignments, Currently, Dr. Mahmud is serving IQAC, BAUST as an Additional Director. He is also an associate editor of the BAUST Journal.
Dr. Mahmud is a fellow of the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB), Bangladesh. Additionally, Dr. Mahmud is active with BAETE about OBE system in Bangladesh and serves as an ET member/observer.
