Dr. Md Mahmudul Hasan Addresses ‘Polythene Bag Pollution and Our Environment’ at “Tarunner Uthshab 2025” Closing Ceremony:
Our esteemed Dean (In charge) of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, BAUST, Associate Professor Dr. Md Mahmudul Hasan, delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking lecture at the closing ceremony of Tarunner Uthshab 2025, a month-long event organized by the BAIUST Civil Engineering Club, BAIUST, Cumilla.

As the guest of honor and keynote speaker, Dr. Mahmud captivated the audience with his powerful 45-minute speech on the pressing issue of “Polythene Bag Pollution and Our Environment.”

Dr. Mahmud discussed the severe consequences of polythene bag pollution, emphasizing its detrimental impact on soil health, water bodies, marine ecosystems, and public health. He elaborated on how non-biodegradable polythene bags clog drainage systems, increase flood risk, contaminate food chains, and contribute significantly to climate change. Additionally, he outlined practical steps to combat these challenges, including initiatives the Bangladesh government took to reduce plastic pollution.

A Bold Initiative: Making BAIUST a Polythene-Free Campus:
During his speech, Dr. Mahmud encouraged students to transform BAIUST into the first polythene bag-free university campus in Bangladesh by July 3, 2025, in alignment with International Plastic Bag Free Day. He emphasized that achieving this goal would be a landmark achievement in Bangladesh’s environmental movement, setting an example for other institutions to follow.

Dr. Mahmud expressed his gratitude to the Department of Civil Engineering, BAIUST, for selecting him for this prestigious program and acknowledged their efforts to raise environmental sustainability awareness.
